There are many reasons why reporting a crime can be
difficult. You may know, for instance, that someone you love and care about is
or has committed a crime. You may be struggling with the snitch culture that is
so prevalent in the United States. There are many reasons, but rest assured,
you can report a crime anonymously in many ways. If the predominant reason you
have not reported the crime is your personal safety, doing so anonymously is
the way to go. It will give the peace of mind of confessing what you know
without putting you and your family in danger, allowing consequences to happen
as they will. Keep in mind that you are not causing anything. The actions of
the guilty will bring upon them the cost of choosing to commit a crime.
Below find a list of ways you can report a crime
anonymously, with the pros and cons of each method.
The basic purpose of WeTip Inc. is to
provide an absolutely anonymous crime reporting resource to residents, students
and businesses throughout the entire Nation. They will not even allow you to
give your name. They in turn contact the local authorities and any federal
agencies that need to know your information. 1-800-78-CRIME (1-800-782-7463).
Their website states if you accidentally reveal personal information you will
have to call back and speak to a different operator. They claim to not keep
records of where any information comes from. You can also report incidents that
happen in schools as well.
·
Google your local Sheriff’s department. They may
have an online form to submit anonymous tips. Understand for your safety, it
may not be anonymous and could capture your IP address which would reveal at
the least, your physical location when you send the form. If your safety is in
jeopardy, this is not the best option for you. This is true of any submission
form on the internet, for future reference.
If the crime you are reporting involves the local police, contact the FBI directly, in an anonymous way we cover later. You cannot trust that other police officers aren’t involved or if people in the country law enforcement are also involved. Submit a tip to the FBI
·
You can contact the National Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS
(8477). It would be best to do so from a public pay phone. You can purchase a “burner”
phone, but to do so you would need to take several precautionary steps. Pay
with cash and only purchase the phone at a store where there is no video surveillance,
which would be very difficult to accomplish at this time.
·
Google the mailing address for your local law
enforcement. Buy a picture postcard that is generic and run of the mill. Write
the message on the postcard and drop it in the mail. (Be sure to put the proper
amount of postage on the card for your location). You don’t need to sign it and
enough people will touch it that prints should be not an issue.
Above all, do whatever needs to be done to protect your
safety. If someone you know, or love is committing crimes, that means that they
are unpredictable, and could be violent towards you. Do not let on that you are
aware of anything. Delete your visit to
this website on your browsing history. Delete any emails in your sent box of
your email account (most people forget to do this). If you can isolate yourself
from this person, do so immediately. If this person is your partner and you
share a home, investigate shelters for battered women and call them, explaining
your situation. Gather the things they recommend you have when you leave (ie,
legal documents, ID, etc.)
