Gabrielle Barrett was a four and a
half year old little girl who had only been living with her mother,
Candice Diaz for three months when she died on New Year's Eve at the
hands of her mother and her mother's boyfriend, Brad Fields. The
child was covered in bruises and suffered burns allegedly because she
ran her own bath.
Prior to this time, she had spent her
entire life with her Grandmother, Cynthia Diaz who failed her horrendously by
leaving her in the care of her mother. The grandmother claimed the
child had to live with her mother to attend pre-k schooling. This
school attendance is not mandatory, but is optional. In most states
you are not required to enroll your child in school until the age of
six. The grandmother stated during the preliminary hearing she saw
Gabby on Christmas and she appeared fine. Her hair and teeth were
fine, though allegedly she had head lice (not life threatening and
easily treated). She did everything but backflips to defend her
daughter from the stand. The grandmother claimed to not have asked
what happened or how Gabby became unresponsive and/or injured. There
is no one on earth who could see a child in that state and not ask
what happened.
Candice Diaz was burned at the age of
four and a half years by her grandmother, who was an
alcoholic who fell asleep in the bed with a cigarette, ignited a house fire and burning her. The grandmother tried to place the blame on the child for the fire. This family has a long history of negligence and abuse. Both the great-grandmother and the grandmother have allegedly served time in prison.

While the results of a future trial are
unknown, Candice will likely suffer a grime fate in prison as inmates
tend to frown on those who either harm children or allow them to be
harmed. More will be posted as it becomes available.
