Jaleel Smith-Riley

According to WBCO, Jaleel Smith-Riley admitted to shooting and killing 22-year-old Porshia Brooks and injuring her boyfriend in 2013 withdrew his guilty plea at his sentencing hearing. On Nov. 16, 2013 , the couple was sitting in a parked car on Carthage Avenue in Norwood when Riley-Smith approached the car and ordered Martin out, according to police. After finding Martin had nothing of value to rob, Riley-Smith shot him in the head, then leaned into the vehicle and fatally shot Brooks, Deters said.

Jaleel became an internet sensation when he sobbed uncontrollably after being sentenced to life without parole. (The viral video is below) Half way through the hearing he chose to withdraw his plea, which means the state can now pursue the death penalty.

What makes this noteworthy is this man's attitude. At the time of the crime, not only did he have no issue with taking things that did not belong to him using a weapon, but felt it was acceptable to kill both parties when they had nothing of value. This is many things, but the most important thing is that it is the definition of entitlement. Jaleel believed he had a right to not only take their belongings, but their lives as well. Again, he was raised in a home, where at one point he was an innocent child, until he figured out there were no consequences for his choices and his family would shield him from any external consequences. The blood from this murder lies not only on his hands, but the hands of family members as well.

People like this are the reason why prisons exist – to protect society from extremely entitled people who feel they have the right to rob, steal and kill other human beings. There is no evidence of racism in this case debunking the prison pipeline myth. He admitted to his horrific crime and had no issue admitting he killed them when he was disappointed when he robbed them.

Since this has happened, a judge has denied his request to withdraw his plea and sentenced him to life without parole. I have actually been in court for this process with someone else. In order to even enter a plea, you are required to answer a series of questions that indicate you understand what you are doing. Clearly he had answered this questions and his request was made after this process.

The Life and Times of Veronic Staley

Vernonica Staley was recently sentenced to life for the murder of Aljosa (Al) Memovic. She was thirty four years old at the time of the murder and was an aspiring singer. They had dated for some time, but in the previous year and half their relationship had deteriorated considerably. Friends had in fact warned Al to not meet up with Veronica. She had set up the telling him she had some of things to return and offered up “Dessert” after the lunch, according to the Houston Chronicle. While not much is known exactly about the length or nature of their relationship, relatives testified that Staley had deep mental issues after trauma she suffered in childhood. The prosecutors acknowledged she had issues, but said they were not sufficient enough to impact her sentencing. This is as it should be. There are literally millions of people living in the United States who have had childhoods filled with unimaginable pain and suffering who do not go on to kill others or live a life of cr...

Sterling Kohen & Questions

Sterling Kohen was a three month and thirty day old baby. At his murder trial, the prosecutor used the word malicious many times and to be honest, it's the perfect word. He was born healthy and over the course of his very short life he remained so and gained weight and grew. At some unknown point and for reasons that are not particularly clear, she began to resent his intrustion on the life she had shared with her older daughter Nala and he boyfriend Zach. He was found in a house that contained everything he needed to survive – formula, bottles, diapers, diaper rash cream, wipes, and clean clothing and blankets. It was not as if they could not afford to care for him. The father believed he was not his child and ignored him for the most part, which no doubt played a part in his mother's rejection. Both parents were abusing meth at the time of the murder. The father was gainfully employed and provided for the physical needs of the child. At the Zach's trial, DN...

Tabitha Buck

Tabitha Buck was convicted in the murder of Lauri Show along with Lisa Michelle Lambert. Clearly, time has been kind to neither woman. Inside sources tell us Tabitha is quiet, keeps to herself and avoids all unnecessary drama. When the Supreme Court ruled that life sentences without parole were unconstitutional when utilized against juveniles, Buck became eligible to be re-sentenced for her role in the murder. She had the decency to testify on the stand, stating: “Honestly, I have some mixed emotions about today’s proceedings,” she said. “I can’t imagine how Laurie’s family feels that this is even happening. I also can’t imagine how my family is feeling that this is even happening”. Time will tell if she is safe to live in society without causing futher harm to others. In her defense, she was new to the area, had no friends and was befriended by Lambert who has proven herself to be controlling, domineering, and rather mentally ill. If released, she would relocate to Oregon, wher...
